It’s all going off!

So the summer series kicked off in style last weekend. When I say style I mean I got picked up at 6.18, 6.18! Leader was super keen to make it to TORCH first thing so off we set! As we barrelled down the gravel path to the track we found out yet again we weren’t first or even second to the track we were 3rd! What have we got to do to get there first?
Anyhow the track looked great. Martin and the gang have really done a great job over the winter.
But they hadn’t sorted the weather just yet brrreezy and chilly. Commander Data had not ordered the hot sun he had promised!
That did not deter the huge turnout for this meeting. 50 odd drivers (some very odd, no names mentioned) all listened to Browner’s wise words of wisdom and Julian’s directions to all the nearest hospitals… er bit worried, how dangerous is this meeting going to be?
Racing started off in the usual fashion. Matt was still building his 511 after his cat had eaten a diff or something. Bob was asleep and Simon was deliberating which end to stick his roll bars.
Qualifying went well for all of us with broken diffs, belts, speedos and shocks. Typical rcLazy approach but somehow after the dust had settled (literally) me and Si had made the 4wd A final and the the other boys had both made 5th in the B for their respective classes.
Plenty of excellent racing in all the finals especially the 2wd A main, very close and clean racing. My main focus has to be the 4wd A mains with local rcLegend Steve Brown and brother Dan qualifying first and second with yours truly ion the 3rd spot. Final 1 went to plan for Steve taking the leg win and my 511 stripping a pulley on the start line
Boo! Racing all looked good as I watched on from the rostrum. Which reminds me, you guys who crash out need to stay on the rostrum and not bundle off in a huff.
Leg 2 started badly for the defending champ and leg 1 winner ending up roof side down for an eternity on turn 1, all worked out nicely for Dan and myself who had a nice gap to P3. Very close and clean racing between the two of us led to me taking the leg 2 win and Dan getting 2nd. Great race Dan, one of the fairest i’ve been in.
So, here we are final round and Steve rockets off with a huuuge lead, leaving me and Dan to battle it out for 2nd place. Dan and I swapping positions almost every lap until some poor marshalling leaves Dan on his roof for ages. It looks like Steve has the win sewn up until a turnbuckle related disaster leaves him with 3 wheel drive for the last two laps and with 20 seconds to make up I put the foot down and tried to catch him.
Which I did on the last lap and took it very easily for the last few corners to take the leg and the overall win!
Honestly I’m still astounded sat here on Monday night writing it up. I’ve been mucking about in off road for 18 months with no meeting wins and only a handful of A final appearances. Really chuffed!
The TORCH gang sorted the final positions out for every one and then went on to present some super trophies and even a bottle of wine for anyone who could hold off Steve B’s domination.
Great days racing, perfect result, really looking forward to R2.
Bring it on!
